The great American poet Ralph Waldo Emerson once said, “The earth laughs in flowers….” Texas artist Nancy B. Medina, CAE, has found a way to express that statement through her art. Nancy's paintings depict rich color pushed to extremes in an expressionistic style. Created with palette knife and oil, Nancy's florals and landscapes draw in the viewer with a sense of vibrancy and evocative texture. Inspired by the impressionistic masters, she uses a dramatic palette to create new interpretations of familiar shapes and forms in nature – with a goal of invoking color with a real sense of movement.
Nancy grew up on an organic farm in East Texas and often got into trouble in school for “doodling” in the margins of her school assignments. Today, she travels throughout Texas photographing the unique floral and botanical inhabitants of our home state. Nancy has worked professionally in design and publishing for over 20 years. Her artwork is displayed in Texas galleries, businesses and in private collections across the U.S. She is a member of the prestigious Oil Painters of America. Nancy’s art has been featured in print and Web publications and on the covers of magazines including Science Editor and The Journal of Emergency Nursing.
Nancy studied art history and color theory at Texas A&M University prior to beginning a painting career in Santa Barbara, California, where she specialized in large botanical and floral watercolors. She also studied under the great contemporary artists Ann Templeton, Francois Arenas, Jean Chambers, and Robert Moore. Her Texas Hill Country landscape series in tribute to the late Ladybird Johnson served as the centerpiece of a special exhibit at Southlake Town Center. Her container garden series was a centerpiece exhibit for the Flower Mound Performing Arts Theater near her home. Inspired by the plants in her back yard retreat, Nancy's large container garden paintings measure three by four foot in size and are filled with pots of flowers in a multitude of colors and textures. She has a passion for flowers that thrive in the Texas heat, including giant sunflowers, bright geraniums, and the purple thistles that grow with reckless abandon in our native pastures.
Nancy’s Fredericksburg geranium series is filled with the whimsical and historical aspects of one of her family's favorite retreats. Nancy's West Texas mural in tribute to the late Frank Tolbert, cofounder of the Terlingua Chili Cookoff, has permanent residence in historic Grapevine, Texas.
Nancy spends evenings and weekends painting in her studio in Flower Mound, Texas, where she resides with her husband Carlos and their three pugs. A portion of all proceeds from Nancy's artwork goes to her other passion, animal rescue. Nancy also dedicates her time as a volunteer for Dallas-Fort Worth Pug Rescue (www.dfwpugs.com). DFW Pug Rescue has placed over 3200 pugs in permanent homes. Her pug paintings are featured on DFW Pug Rescue T shirts and gift items which help pay the vet bills for this volunteer-run organization.
