Painting Fresh Peonies

New Spring Peonies 20X20
New Spring Peonies, 20X20, oil, information

I painted peonies fresh from my garden live today for members of my online Joyful Brush class. This is the first time I’ve ever painted my own home-grown peony blossoms! The flower models are the Dr. Alexander Fleming variety, and were the first to open in my garden. Their pale pink color kept saying “come hither” to my paintbrush, but I held out until I had two big flowers completely open before bring the plant, pot and all, into the studio for my Petal Perks class. This flowering bush find a home Monday in the deep planter boxes we’re having built on our new deck. The rest of the peony bushes are in the ground, and getting a big drink of water from Mother Nature today. (Can you tell I’m hoping for fuschia and white to bloom, too?)

I’ve been painting from silk peonies throughout winter, and creating artwork from real flowers inspires richer color choices, and a more complex layering of temperature shifts. One of the things even good silk peonies often often miss is the colorful center. Adding those final pops of orange and yellow filaments to the belly button brightens up a peony and gives it so much more life.

Fortunately, I didn’t have to shake any ants off of these flowers on the way in to the studio, but next time I’ll be on the lookout, when ants and bees will be hunting for dinner in the fresh air of Colorado Springs!
